TIME Asia article on Tony Jaa: Ong-Bak star

Tony-Jaa.jpgYou are in for a treat come February. If you haven't see Ong-Bak you will have your chance soon. Famed french director and producer Luc Besson recut the film and secured a U.S. distribution deal with Magnolia Pictures. No word on Canadian dates yet but one can only hope.

In the meantime I came across an article proclaiming Tony as the new Bruce Lee. Bruce, huh? We here at Twitch has always compared him to Jackie and Jet. The athletecism and grace of Jackie combined with the ferocity and power of Jet. Regardless, Tony kicks huge ass and you will be converted once you see him in action.

why did besson re-cut the film? wasn't it fine before? is this a miramax-like move?

This film was in dier need of a trim. I look forward to see that version.

I agree with Swarez ... there was plenty of trim-able material here. It'll be a better film tightened up a bit ... the difference between Besson and Miramax is that Besson actually has a clue when it comes to martial arts film. He's a fan of the genre and has produced some good ones himself ... he'll treat it with respect ...

My name is Danny Le. I am hard of hearing but can hear a little about 50 percentage of hearing and speak as well. I really like your fighting style. It is unique that I never seen it from your movie in Ong-Bak. It is awesome! Please make sure put English on subtitle and closed caption when you are making other new movies. I would be appreciate your help. Good luck for your career. Do your best! Danny Le

I don't think the extra (i.e. non-fighting, middling acting) material hurts the film one bit...You need a breather from those crazy action sequences....This is the best new (non arthouse) fighting film in the past 10 years, easily!!

Capsule from 2003 tiff here. (scroll to bottom of page)
