Here's a rumor that I hope and pray turns out to be false ...
Aint it Cool is reporting that Darren Aronofsky is no longer at the helm of The Watchmen. According to their report the studio is in a rush to get this thing in production and isn't willing to wait until he wraps up work on The Fountain. What? You weren't aware that he was already in production on another film when you signed him? Bad planning on the studio's part now means that their scrambling around trying to find a replacement on short notice ...
The only other directors that leap to mind as good fits for this are Terry Gilliam - who was actually attached to an earlier Watchmen project - and Richard Kelly, but both of them are currently at work on other projects, which rules 'em both out for the same reasons as Aronofsky.
Putting themselves in a position where they have to make a snap decision like this means the studio isn't going to have a broad selection of talent to choose from - newsflash: the good people tend to be busy and you have to wait in line - and I'm more than a little nervous that they'll put some populist hack on it who won't understand the tone of the graphic novel at all and spoil the whole thing.
Hey! Paul WS Anderson is available! No, forget I said that ...
