Stupidity at its finest. Is this the sequel to The Descent?

So, remember the other week when we talked about someone out there having the bright idea to write a sequel to Neil Marshall’s standout horror film, The Descent? We were pretty much in full agreement that this sequel, with the clever title The De2cent, was not a good idea. For the rest of you may I present to you this finding over at BloodyDisgusting which may sway you to our side. If this is how The De2cent is going to turn out, count me out. It is worse than my crappy Photoshop logo.

We’ve been informed that this is a coverage report from an older draft and there will be re-writes… B-D reader ‘Emmet K’ stumbled upon something that will cause insanity among fans of Neil Marshall’s The Descent. Inside you’ll find a studios coverage report for Pathe’s The De2cent. A coverage report is a studio execs full notes on the screenplay - and is basically a detailed review. This reader recommends it, so hopefully someone picks it up for US (since Lionsgate isn’t involved). Also note, there are many (MAJOR) spoilers, so read on at your own risk!

I’ll send you over to BD to read the full coverage report but not without a SPOILER ALERT WARNING. Don’t come bitching to me cause I’ve warned you now. You can find the report here.

The scary part is that many of those who comment on this over and BD actually look forward to this crap. And the comments from the reader do not bode well.

My understanding was that Sarah went a little loopy at the end, and that her goose was pretty much cooked. Apparently this translates into leaving the “ending wide open.” But to have her come back as a cowering vegetable (after being such a bad ass) and then team up with Juno (who deserved to die, c’mon). Just plain wrong.

    Uhm… No it’s not!?!?
It’s exactly the reason why most of the genre sequels suck balls, dude!

Why not just take some dogs instead of people. Then we get also rid of those spoken words that use to confuse audiences in today’s complicated gore movies. Ooooooops! My brain just fell out of my ear…

Wow, that all sounds pretty horrid if it’s true.

I agree this all sounds lame but the structure and tone of the coverage report is amateurish.  I don’t believe it’s the real deal.  If it is, all I can say is that the only reason why none of us land a job within the film industry is because we’re not related to any of the big wigs. In other words, skill is not a requirement in Hollywood if you know the right people. Any how, this is how I’d do a Descent sequel: go with the Alien comparison from the first film and get your sequel to compare well with the Alien sequel ALIENS.  How do you do that?  Have a rescue team come in the cave with the mission to “rescue” the missing girls from the original.  After much searching around, they finally find an unconscious Sarah. It turns out she’s in a coma and doesn’t wake up until a few months after.  Once she’s conscious, the authorities tell her she’s suspected of murdering the other women as they gathered up evidence from the cave that points to her killing them. This would initially lend credence to the theory that “it was all in her head about the mutants existing” but Sarah would adamantly claim she’s innocent and that there are mutants in the cave responsible for killing her friends. Since the authorities can’t actually find all the bodies, they eventually send an armed unit of trained badasses to the cave for further inspection…however, forcing Sarah to accompany them (ala Ripley in Aliens). While back there, one of the members of the unit falls into a hole and screams for help and that’s where the terror begins. The rest of the unit can’t find that one guy and eventually get lost in the cave. They lose their cool but Sarah, determined to leave the cave for good, takes the reigns and tries to lead them out. However, the unit can’t agree on whether to trust her or not.  At one point during this, she even recalls and confesses to attacking Juno for the affair she had with her man.  As a result of this revelation, one of the guys claims this proves her mutant story is B.S. and threatens to kill her on the spot. After much in-fighting, they leave her stranded while they try to leave the cave on their own. Keep in mind, we haven’t seen ANY mutants this whole time.  That is, until, the armed unit go on their own, Sarah starts to see the mutants once again. Instead of being scared, she fights back bravely until one of the guys comes back to rescue her and sees the mutants himself. With a gun in hand, he fires away and kills a small horde of mutants that attacked Sarah. Her story is finally proven legit..and the story goes from there with what turns out to be even more mutants than Sarah saw in the original. We’ll see tons of shootouts and we even get to see the HEAD of the mutants who would promise to be one HUGE and extremely DEADLY mofo. With respect to characterization, I’d give each member of the armed unit time to show some strong personalities that we can all relate to, and they’d all be mature individuals. Maybe one of them takes a liking to Sarah and vice-versa to up the emotional factor? I’d also assume Juno was killed at the end of the original but maybe hint in a twisted twist that before she was killed, she was used as a breeder for a new mutant offspring that will prove to be deadlier in a possible part 3. With this in mind, Sarah and all of the armed unit would die thinking they took all the mutants with them but in the film’s final shot, we see the new type of mutant walking around the cave and screeching as we fade to black. Isn’t this version better? Thoughts?

Being friends with a media big shot is far from a prerequisite and won’t alone secure you an industry job, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t help you to jump the queue. This industry might be more incestuous than British aristocracy.
